The Brief
Our client wanted to completely transform their staircase and understair area, turning a dark, underused space into something both beautiful and practical. The existing staircase had a solid wall banister that blocked light and made the hallway feel closed in, while the space beneath the stairs was largely wasted.
The goal was to carry out a full staircase renovation while designing bespoke understair storage units that maximised every inch of available space.
The Staircase Renovation
We began by removing the old banister wall, which instantly opened up the staircase and allowed more light to flow through the hallway.
The new staircase was fitted with:
- Solid oak posts, handrails, and spindles for a timeless and durable finish
- Oak-veneered panels cladding the stringers to create a clean, seamless look
- Carefully matched materials to give the staircase a cohesive, high-quality appearance
The new oak features brought warmth and character to the space while significantly improving the overall feel of the hallway.
Bespoke Understair Storage Solutions
One of the key parts of this project was designing and building integrated understair storage units. Rather than leaving the space empty or installing standard cupboards, we created custom-built cabinets designed specifically for the client’s needs.
The storage units were constructed using laminated oak-veneered panels, matching the staircase finish and ensuring the storage blends perfectly with the surrounding design.
The finished storage includes:
- Pull-out clothes hanger storage – perfect for coats and jackets
- Pull-out shoe storage drawers – keeping footwear neatly organised and hidden away
These bespoke units make the most of the available space, transforming what was once unused space into practical and stylish understair storage.
