Staircase Cladding in Huddersfield

Staircase Cladding in Huddersfield: A Stunning Transformation

The original staircase was the first thing anybody saw walking through the main entrance to this home and although functional, was tired, covered in carpet and very run of the mill.

The Previous Staircase Before Renovation

Our bespoke staircase cladding turned it into a gorgeous feature for our customer's home. Every step, riser, and stringer has been overlaid with beautiful Ash timber, creating the look and feel of a brand-new solid wood staircase. We recently completed this staircase cladding in Huddersfield, which showcases the dramatic difference a quality staircase renovation can make. The transformation is not only visually stunning but also built to last for decades – far outlasting any carpet and likely several replacements.

27mm Thick Treads – Solid, Quiet, and Built to Last

One of the standout features of this Huddersfield staircase project is our use of 27mm thick hardwood treads. These quality treads provide rock-solid stability underfoot and a quiet step without any creaks. Unlike some staircase companies who use thinner 18–20mm boards that can flex and wear out faster, our 27mm treads ensure each step feels as sturdy as a full timber stair. This added thickness also means a longer-lasting finish, as the treads can withstand years of foot traffic with minimal wear.

  • Stability: Thicker treads eliminate any bounce or flex in the steps, giving you confidence with every footfall.
  • Quiet Steps: The solid timber absorbs sound, so you won't hear loud clacks or creaks as you walk up and down.
  • Durability: With more wood underfoot, the stairs resist dents and wear, maintaining their like-new look for the long term.
  • Premium Feel: The heft of 27mm wood treads looks and feels more luxurious, upgrading the overall quality of the staircase.

Bespoke Strait Staircase with Landing

This project involved a straight staircase with one landing – the staircase makes a 90° turn using a small flat landing area. Every part of this unique layout was custom-clad to fit perfectly. We carefully cut and fitted the Ash cladding on the winding steps so that the grain flows seamlessly around the turn. The landing was clad to match the treads, creating continuity between the different sections of the staircase. Even the stringers (the sides of the staircase) were fully clad in Ash, giving a seamless finish with no painted wood or gaps in sight. The result is a completely bespoke look, as if the entire staircase was built from solid Ash in the first place.

In the image above, you can see how the cladding wraps every element of the winder staircase. The precise craftsmanship ensures there are no visible edges or unfinished areas – just smooth, continuous Ash wood from the bottom step to the top landing. This level of attention to detail elevates the staircase into a stunning architectural feature within the home.

New Banister for a Complete Transformation

To complement the newly clad stairs, we also undertook a banister replacement as part of this renovation. The old banister and handrail were removed and replaced with a modern design that pairs beautifully with the Ash steps. The new banister not only solidifies the staircase’s safety and stability, but also adds visual impact.

With its fresh wood tone and sturdy construction, the banister ties the whole look together. This new railing will outlast any carpet or temporary trend – it’s a timeless feature that adds value and style to the home. The homeowners can now enjoy a staircase that is both safe and stunning, without worrying about wobbly rails or worn-out finishes.

Ash Timber Cladding – The Oak Alternative

For this staircase cladding project, the material of choice was Ash timber. Ash is a fantastic, cost-effective alternative to oak that offers the same durability and long lifespan. It has a beautiful natural grain that brings warmth and character, similar to oak, but at a lower price point. By choosing Ash, our clients achieved the high-end look of an oak staircase without breaking the budget.

Importantly, it’s a hardwood known for its strength – just as tough and wear-resistant as oak – so it easily handles the daily use a staircase sees. Over the years, the Ash cladding will continue to perform well, resisting dents and scratches while maintaining its beauty. For homeowners seeking a premium wooden staircase finish at a sensible cost, Ash is an ideal choice.
